An additional field setting (Edit Mode) only applies to Custom Objects. This setting controls where field data may be edited (either in the custom object’s detail page, in the grid column added to another object type, or in either location). The following options are provided:

  • Editable in Detail Page Only: This enables users to modify field values only in the custom object’s detail records. Example: a custom object called “Services” might include a field for the standard fee charged for that service. Users would only be able edit the fee on the service detail page. They would not be able to change the fee from within the grid column in the contract.

  • Editable in Associated Record Only: This enables users to modify field values only in the grid column within another object type. The field in the custom object’s detail record is hidden. Example: a custom object called “Services”, where the service fee is different in every contract, might include a grid column for Service fee that users must fill out for each contract.

  • Editable in Detail (default data) and Associated Record: This enables users to enter a field value in the custom object’s detail record and have that come over as the default value in the grid added to another record. However, users can edit the value in the grid to override the default. Example: a custom object called “Services”, where there is a standard fee for a particular service, but users can enter a different fee for certain contracts without changing the standard fee in the detail record.
