A “Free Form” Custom Object allows you to add blank rows to the sub-grid in a parent record without having to select from pre-defined custom object type records.

How to create a Free Form Custom Object

1. Add the new custom object type:

From the homepage, click to open the Application Settings, and then select from the Settings menu.

Select Custom from the Object Types drop-down.

Click at the top in the menu bar.

Scroll down and click .

On the blank line enter:

  • Name (singular form of the custom object) "Service".

  • Plural Form "Services".

  • Use the drop-down menu in the Behavior column and choose either Standard, Free Form, or Asset. Selecting Asset or Free Form creates a "free form" custom object in which there are no predefined records - users add blank rows and enter information directly in the parent record. If you require predefined line items/records (such as Providers, Services, Products, etc.) select the default, which is Standard. NOTE: This selection cannot be changed after you save the new custom object type.

Click .

Go to and for each role that needs access, open Permissions and set the desired access level for the new Custom Object.

2. Add custom fields to the new custom object layout:

Select from the Settings menu.

Select Custom from the Object Types drop-down.

Select the new type you added in Step 1 to display the layout.

Add fields and modify field properties as needed. NOTE: Since the detail page will not be visible to users, you can place the fields anywhere on the layout.

Click .

3. Add the new custom object to the layout(s) of other objects (Assignment, Contract, Contact, Organization or Request):

Select from the Settings menu.

Select the Object (e.g., Contract) and Type (e.g., MSA) to which you want to add the custom object.

Click the Grids link and click on the custom object to add it to the layout. Drag the sub-grid to the desired location on the layout. TIP: Click the Fields link on the right-side first to collapse the Fields selection menu.

Use the Columns drop-down to select the columns you want displayed in the sub-grid.
