There are two methods for removing fields from a layout.
NOTE: A few key fields in each object type are always required and cannot be removed from layouts. They include:
Contract: Contract Type, Contract ID, External Organization, Org Ownership
Contact: Contact Type, Contact ID, First Name, Last Name, Organization, Org Ownership
Organization: Organization Type, Organization ID, Name, Org Ownership
Document: Document Type, Document ID, Org Ownership
Request: Request Type, Request ID, Contract Type
Method 1: Drag and Drop
Drag the field off the layout in any direction. The following message is displayed: “Remove this field from the layout?”

. The field is added back to the Fields List on the right-side.

Method 2: From Field Settings
Locate and click the cog icon 
to open Field Settings for the field.
Click 
. The field is added back to the Fields List.

Clearing all Fields from a Layout
To completely clear the layout and remove every field, click the 
button.
